Fragments of Lore

A small, leather-bound book rests in its solitude upon the table in the tower's library. No one is near so you feel the curious need to stretch out and take hold of the book. A page is marked by a small, folded piece of parchment with a note scribbled across it...'see the trees'. The words mean nothing but stoke the curiosity to look further upon the marked page. The page was titled “An deamhan de nádúr”...the demon of nature. You begin reading...

"... to my knowledge there are only four clans. Their numbers dwindle but from what I do not know. They call themselves by no collective name but their spirits hold a personal calling. From what I observed there are stark differences between clans but within groups there are striking similarities.

The four clans, the spirits of antiquity, are tied within the elements. None carry dominance over all as one might expect or surmise but each are bound to their element. Their abilities, as yet fully unknown, do carry with it the power to influence or be influenced by their namesake element. Whether it is something they can contain or control...I have yet to find evidence of. Last but not least...they are spirits born of living elements, coming from the very depths of time as the Avatars themselves. No story tells of their origins but they are counted amongst those on either side in the War of Freedom. They hold no mortal allegiance...The coals have grown cold and now must be stoked."

The remaining pages of the book are scorched and hold no legible writing. Your curiosity draws you to thumb through the preceding pages, upon which you find a map of Finnora, a sole mark to the north catching your eye, and two separate sketches annotated by the following quotations:

"Before the words 'the beginning'.... Well before the time of antiquity, we were. Not many alive know the form we took in those days or the form we take now, but soon you will see. When the edifice of your fool heartedly, selfish ambitions come crashing around you...you will see." --Wethrildae

"We were there when the ancient of races clawed their way from the ground, watching them fight for the scraps of their survival. We were there amidst the darkened days of hell-bound slavery. We were there when freedom was won for you at the hands of our young. We were there through your wars and your peace, bound to ever shrinking lands while yours flourished.

Your history is our entombment, but we've come to get our freedom and our land back..." --Adhantaí
